Is your CVT whining, juddering or revving without picking up speed? Our London repair centres find the root cause first, so you only pay for the work your gearbox actually needs.
We repair push-belt and chain CVTs on all major makes, including the Nissan Qashqai and Juke, Honda Jazz, Audi Multitronic, Toyota and Subaru. Our work covers repairs, rebuilds, reconditioned replacements, reprogramming and recalibration. Repairs use manufacturer warranty-approved parts and are backed by our 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on parts and labour.

Instead of fixed gears, a CVT uses two cone-shaped pulleys joined by a steel belt or chain. As the pulleys change width, the ratio changes smoothly and continuously, keeping the engine at its most efficient speed. Most CVTs fall into one of three groups.
The most common type in London traffic, including Nissan Xtronic (Qashqai, Juke, X-Trail, Note, Micra), Honda Jazz and HR-V, and non-hybrid Toyota automatics.
Use a chain rather than a belt to handle more torque. Found in Audi Multitronic on front-wheel-drive A4, A5, A6 and A7 models, and Subaru Lineartronic.
Toyota and Lexus hybrids use planetary gears instead of belts and pulleys. See our hybrid transmission repairs page.
CVT faults usually give plenty of warning. Catching them early can mean a targeted repair rather than a full rebuild.
Old, low, overfilled or incorrect fluid is one of the biggest causes of CVT damage.
A worn or stretched belt or chain causes slipping and flaring revs.
The most common source of whining and droning noises.
Cause slipping, delayed engagement and erratic ratio changes.
Trigger warning lights and limp mode, and are a known issue on Audi Multitronic.
The usual cause of judder when pulling away from a standstill.
Describe the symptoms to one of our specialists and we'll tell you the likely cause and the next step. If your car isn't safe to drive, we can arrange collection.

Replaced with the manufacturer-specified CVT fluid as part of a repair.
A worn or stretched belt or chain renewed.
The main fix for whining and droning noises.
Cures slipping, flaring revs and delayed engagement.
Including the known Audi Multitronic control unit fault.
Complete strip-down, renewal of worn parts and testing.
A reconditioned unit, only when a rebuild isn't sensible.
Many CVT faults don't need a new gearbox. We find the real cause first and recommend a targeted fix wherever we can.
Full testing, not just a fault code read. The report is usually ready within 2–3 days.
We explain the fault, the repair we recommend and the confirmed price. Nothing starts without your approval.
Carried out with OEM or manufacturer warranty-approved parts and the correct CVT fluid.
The CVT is recalibrated, then the car is road tested before it comes back to you.
We repair CVTs from every major manufacturer. These are some of the most common units we see at our London centres.

Not every automatic version of these models uses a CVT. If you're unsure what's fitted to your car, give us a call and we'll check for you.
A CVT (continuously variable transmission) is an automatic gearbox with no fixed gears. It uses two pulleys linked by a steel belt or chain, which change size to give a smooth, continuous range of ratios.
A CVT varies its ratio continuously using pulleys and a belt or chain. A DSG or other dual-clutch gearbox uses two clutches to switch between fixed gears. A torque converter automatic uses a fluid coupling and planetary gear sets. Each has its own typical faults, so a proper diagnosis matters.
A whine, hum or drone that changes with road speed is usually caused by worn pulleys or bearings inside the gearbox. Getting it diagnosed early is usually much cheaper than waiting until a full rebuild is needed.
If the revs rise but the car doesn't pick up speed, the drive is slipping. This is typically caused by degraded fluid, a worn belt or chain, or a valve body or step motor fault.
Judder from a standstill is usually caused by torque converter or clutch pack wear, although belt, chain and fluid problems can cause it too. Stop-start London traffic tends to make it more noticeable.
Yes. Many CVT faults can be fixed with a targeted repair, such as a valve body, step motor or control unit fix. Where wear is more extensive we can fully rebuild the gearbox, and we only recommend a reconditioned replacement when a rebuild isn't sensible.
With the correct fluid and sensible driving, many CVTs last well beyond 100,000 miles. Lifespan depends on the design, how the car is driven and how well the fluid has been looked after.
It depends on the fault and the repair needed. A targeted repair costs far less than a rebuild or replacement. We carry out a full diagnostic first and confirm the price before any work starts.
No. We use OEM or manufacturer warranty-approved parts, so your warranty is protected, and we can deal with your warranty provider on your behalf. Every repair is covered by our 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on parts and labour.
Price confirmed upfront. Manufacturer warranty-approved parts. 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on every repair.
