Is your DSG juddering, flashing PRNDS lights or stuck in limp mode? You don't need to know what's wrong. Tell us the symptoms and a DSG specialist from our London repair centres will find the cause and talk you through the fix.
We repair 6-speed and 7-speed DSG gearboxes on Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda models. Our work covers diagnostics, clutch replacement, mechatronic repair, coding and reprogramming, and full rebuilds. Repairs use manufacturer warranty-approved parts and are backed by our 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on parts and labour.
DSG is the Volkswagen Group's dual-clutch automatic, fitted across VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda. One clutch handles the odd gears and the other the even gears, so the next gear is always pre-selected. The result is near-instant changes and better fuel economy, but repairing one properly takes specialist knowledge. There are three main types.
Used with smaller engines in models like the Polo, Golf, Ibiza and Fabia. This is the version most associated with judder, flashing gear lights and mechatronic faults, especially in stop-start London traffic.
Built for higher-torque petrol and diesel engines. The clutches run in oil, so old or degraded gearbox oil is a common cause of faults.
Fitted to larger and more powerful models. These are generally more robust, but they still suffer clutch wear and mechatronic faults over time.
Most DSG faults can be repaired at component level. Getting the gearbox checked early is the best way to avoid a bigger bill.
The mechatronic unit is the brain of a DSG gearbox. It combines the electronics, sensors and hydraulic valve body that control gear selection, clutch operation and hydraulic pressure. When it develops a fault, you'll typically see harsh changes, warning lights, limp mode, loss of drive or difficulty selecting gears.
A faulty mechatronic unit doesn't always mean a new one. Many faults, including sensor, solenoid, pressure accumulator and control board problems, can be repaired. After every mechatronic repair we carry out the coding, programming and adaptation the gearbox needs to work properly.
Worn clutch packs cause judder, slipping and poor pull-away, and they're one of the most common reasons for a DSG repair.
Sensor, solenoid, accumulator and control board faults cause erratic shifts, warning lights and limp mode.
Old or low oil causes overheating, wear and pressure problems, particularly on wet-clutch units.
Out-of-range clutch adaptations or software faults can cause judder and harsh shifts, even on healthy hardware.
When wear goes beyond the clutches and mechatronic unit, a full rebuild is usually the cost-effective fix.

Call us and describe what your car is doing. We'll tell you the likely cause and the next step, and if your car isn't safe to drive we can arrange collection.
0203 905 6741 Mon–Fri · 8am–5:30pmFull fault finding, live data and a road test.
New clutches for judder, slipping and poor pull-away.
Sensor, solenoid, accumulator and control board repairs.
Unit testing, rebuild or refurbishment.
Software coding and programming after repair.
Clutch and gear relearn after every DSG repair.
Rebuilt to factory specification when wear is extensive.
A reconditioned unit, only when a rebuild isn't sensible.
Many DSG faults don't need a new gearbox. We find the real cause first and repair only what needs repairing.
Full testing, not just a fault code read. The report is usually ready within 2–3 days.
We explain the fault, the repair we recommend and the confirmed price. Nothing starts without your approval.
Carried out with OEM or manufacturer warranty-approved parts and the correct DSG oil.
Coding, adaptation and recalibration, then a road test before your car comes back to you.
We repair DSG gearboxes across the whole Volkswagen Group range, including:
Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc, T-Cross, Touran, Sharan, Arteon, Scirocco, CC, Eos, Jetta, Beetle, Caddy, Transporter
A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, S3, S4, S5, TT, Q2, Q5, R8
Fabia, Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq, Karoq, Kamiq, Scala, Rapid, Yeti, Roomster
Ibiza, Leon, Arona, Ateca, Tarraco, Alhambra, Altea, Toledo
Not every automatic version of these models uses a DSG. If you're unsure what's fitted to your car, give us a call and we'll check for you.
DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) is the Volkswagen Group's dual-clutch automatic. One clutch handles the odd gears and the other the even gears, so the next gear is pre-selected and changes are almost instant. The whole process is controlled by the mechatronic unit.
A DSG is a type of DCT (dual-clutch transmission). Ford Powershift, Porsche PDK and Audi S tronic all work on the same principle, and they share many of the same faults and repairs.
The 6-speed DQ250 (02E) is a wet-clutch gearbox built for higher-torque engines. The 7-speed DQ200 (0AM) is a dry-clutch gearbox used with smaller engines, and it is the version most often linked to judder, flashing gear lights and mechatronic faults. Larger, more powerful models use wet-clutch 7-speed units such as the DQ381 and DQ500.
The mechatronic unit is the gearbox's control centre. It combines the electronic control unit, sensors and hydraulic valve body in one assembly, and it controls gear selection, clutch operation and hydraulic pressure.
Common signs are flashing PRNDS lights, gearbox warning messages, a sudden loss of drive, being stuck in one gear or limp mode, harsh or delayed shifts, and judder. Many mechatronic faults, such as sensor, solenoid, pressure accumulator or control board faults, can be repaired without replacing the whole unit.
Flashing PRNDS lights mean the gearbox control system has detected a fault, and it usually puts the car into a reduced or limp mode to protect the gearbox. Common causes are a mechatronic fault, low hydraulic pressure, worn clutches or a sensor fault, so get it diagnosed promptly.
Judder is the most common DSG complaint, especially on the 7-speed dry-clutch DQ200. It's usually caused by worn clutches, clutches that need re-adapting, or a mechatronic control problem. Some cases are cured by recalibration, while worn clutches need replacing.
Yes. Most DSG faults can be fixed with a targeted clutch or mechatronic repair, or the gearbox can be rebuilt to factory specification. Every repair is followed by recalibration and covered by our 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty.
It depends on the fault. A clutch or mechatronic repair usually costs much less than a replacement gearbox, which is why we diagnose first. You get a full diagnostic and a confirmed quote to approve before any work starts.
No. We use OEM or manufacturer warranty-approved parts, so your warranty is protected, and we can deal with your warranty provider on your behalf.
Price confirmed upfront. Manufacturer warranty-approved parts. 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on every repair.
