What does the DSG or gearbox warning light mean on an BMW?

A gearbox warning light on an BMW typically means the mechatronic unit, valve body, clutch pack, torque converter or transmission sensor has detected a fault. The most common causes are mechatronic unit failure, low hydraulic pressure, valve body wear, solenoid faults, contaminated gearbox oil, worn clutch packs or a torque converter problem. In some cases the car will refuse to select gears and go into a safe or limp mode. Do not ignore a gearbox warning light. Can I drive my BMW with a gearbox fault?

Some faults allow short journeys but most get worse quickly under load.
